Scottish national Gallery :- Steven Campbell

On Sunday i visited that national gallery of Scotland, whilst there where many interesting exhibitions within the gallery (some of which i was more enthusiastic about then the one i am writing about) i have decided to write about Steven Campbell, mostly because i have never previously heard of him so i couldn't form any pre conceptions about his work, i had no idea of what to expect and i was largely pleasantly surprised by what i experienced, Although the atmosphere of the piece uncomfortable due to the surrealist and dystopian nature of his work i believe it was the desired effect. The bare walls of the exhibition space where plastered from floor to ceiling in the artists drawings, i felt that it was a nice touch to the over all image of the exhibition. I enjoyed being able to see his thought process, like a bizarre patchwork quilt of Campbells ideas.

Campbell also used the surreal and often threatening imagery with the juxtaposition of music with amorous undertones, this again added to uneasiness when viewing his work. Over all the way in which the exhibition was constructed was more then effective in making the viewer feel both un easy and intrigued.
